Special Education Department
Welcome to the Bristol School District’s Special Education Department! We are here to help every student learn and grow in the best way for them. Our team works hard to create a caring and supportive environment where all children can succeed. On this page, you’ll find information about the programs and services we offer to support your child. We are here to answer your questions and work with you to help your child reach their full potential. Your child’s success is our top priority!

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law that assures children and youth with disabilities a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE).

Our intervention specialists work with general education teachers to use proven teaching methods that follow Ohio Learning Standards and help students grow. Special education staff provide small group instruction inside and outside the classroom to meet each child’s unique needs. At Bristol, we believe in inclusion, so all students can learn and grow together.
Our staff is committed to our students as they transition from the elementary to the middle/high school and beyond to adulthood using post secondary training, college enrollment, workforce development, and military enlistment.

We work with the Trumbull County Education Service Center (TCESC) to provide important support services for our students, such as speech and language therapy, occupational and physical therapy, audiology, vision therapy, and a school psychologist. We also partner with TCESC and the Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities (TCBDD) to offer specialized services for students from preschool through age 23 who need extra support.

Child Find - Searching for Students with Disabilities

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) includes something called the Child Find mandate. This rule requires all school districts to identify, locate, and evaluate children with disabilities, no matter how severe their disabilities may be.

The purpose of Child Find is to ensure that every child who might need special education services is identified and supported even if they are not currently receiving special education services. Child Find applies to all children from birth through age 21 who live in the state. This includes children in private and public schools, children who are highly mobile (like migrant or homeless children), and children who are wards of the state.

If you believe your child may need special education services, we encourage you to reach out to the Bristol Local School District Special Education Office at 330-889-2621 option 5. We are here to help evaluate your child and, if necessary, create a plan to meet their unique needs.
